There are some low cost (~$100 US) that offer fairly good accuracy and moderate range, I have a Stanley "Fat Max™ TLM100" that works well for estimation and similar work. For short distances < 6ft (2m) a tape works better, but for longer distances it is very convienent, though if I’m concerned about accuracy I’ll still use a tape since the rated accuracy of the TLM100 is +-1/4inch (6mm)

There are units available with much better range and accuracy, but with a much higher price and some may be a bit bigger than pocket size.

I take it you want to know which is better, in that case the laser is much more accurate, but sometimes very un-practicle.

Perhaps it would be possible, considering the speed of light it would take some processor power and for short distances I believe measuring tapes will work just fine and they are handy . They do not fail due to battery’s running low or smudges or scratches, on the optics. for long distances lasers are probably a good choice. Miles or more I would think.
